About the I-5 Corridor Improvement Project

Download BrochureOver the next five years, Caltrans is investing over $1.6 billion to improve southern segments along the Santa Ana Freeway (I-5) between the Orange County line and the San Gabriel River Freeway (I-605). Improvements will enhance safety, improve traffic flow, reduce congestion, encourage ride sharing, decrease surface street traffic and help improve air quality.

Projects Include

HOV High-Occupancy Vehicle (HOV or carpool) Lanes
Carpool lanes for vehicles with two or more passengers
Mixed-Flow Lane Mixed-Flow Lane
Lane for all motorists
Interchange Modifications Interchange Modifications
Upgraded on-ramps and off-ramps, bridge widening or bridge reconstruction
Pedestrian Overcrossing Pedestrian Overcrossing
Bridge for pedestrians to cross over freeway

Reconstruction or improving road surfaces adjacent to freeway

I-5 HOV/Alondra Boulevard Bridge

Improvement:

Widen freeway to add one HOV land and one general purpose lane in each direction, reconstruct Alondra Boulevard, Coyote Creek, and North Fork Coyote Creek structures. Also realign and upgrade frontage roads.


Start: Early 2012
Completion: Mid 2015

Cost: $110 million

I-5 HOV/Carmenita Road Interchange IN CONSTRUCTION

Improvement:

Widen freeway to add one HOV lane and one general purpose lane in each direction, reconstruct the Carmenita Road Bridge as a 10-lane structure, upgrade Freeway Drive and Firestone Boulevard frontage roads.


Start: Late 2011
Completion: Late 2015

Cost: $380 million

I-5 HOV/Rosecrans Avenue and Bloomfield Avenue Bridges IN CONSTRUCTION

Improvement:

Widen freeway to add one HOV lane and one general purpose lane in each direction, widen and reconstruct Shoemaker Avenue, Rosecrans Avenue and Bloomfield Avenue bridges, construct a pedestrian overcrossing at Silverbow Avenue, and improvements at Rosecrans Avenue and Firestone Boulevard.

Improvement:

Widen freeway to add one HOV lane and one general purpose lane in each direction, reconstruct the interchange and bridges at Valley View Avenue, Artesia Boulevard, and Coyote Creek, and realign Firestone Boulevard frontage road.

Completion: Late 2016

Cost: $416 million

Improvement:

Widen freeway to add one HOV lane and one general purpose lane in each direction, widen and reconstruct bridges at San Antonio Drive, Imperial Highway and Pioneer Boulevard, and a construct a new SB off-ramp at Imperial Highway.
