Construction Activities

FLORENCE AVENUE INTERCHANGE PROJECT

The most recent pile driving activity adjacent to the Florence Avenue interchange along northbound I-5, just south of the Florence Avenue bridge, has been temporarily completed.

The week of April 4, crews will begin driving test piles along the southbound I-5 Florence Avenue on-ramp. This work will take place during the daytime, between 7 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. and will take approximately three days to complete. Pile driving activity is needed as crews construct the foundation for the new Florence Avenue bridge, as well as the new retaining walls, soundwalls and freeway on- and off-ramps. Please be advised, this work may be loud and disruptive due to equipment noise, vibration and pounding related to pile driving activity.

Crews are working to form soundwalls along northbound and southbound I-5. Roadway excavation is underway behind k-rail and the construction fencing, along Mondon Avenue between Cecilia Street and Buell Street. Over the next few weeks crews will be pouring concrete for the new soundwall adjacent to southbound I-5. This work will be conducted weekdays (Monday through Friday) between 6:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. and will be ongoing for approximately the next two to three weeks.

Shoring activity is still underway along the Orr and Day railroad bridge, which passes underneath the I-5 freeway. This work will take place weekdays (Monday through Friday) between 6:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. and will be ongoing for approximately the next three to four weeks.

IMPERIAL HIGHWAY & PIONEER BOULEVARD PROJECT

Adoree Street and Frontage Road, have both been opened to through traffic between Imperial Highway and Norwalk Boulevard.

Construction of the retaining wall along Mondon Avenue, between Tina Street and Bayla Street is ongoing. As crews work to complete improvements in this area, access on Mondon Avenue is temporarily limited to local traffic only, as crews work to complete improvements in this area. This work will be conducted weekdays between 7 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. for the next few weeks.

As crews work on Imperial Highway, Pioneer Boulevard and Norwalk Boulevard bridges at I-5, one lane in each direction will be closed on each street (at I-5) during the daytime.

In the coming weeks nighttime closures are planned on Pioneer Boulevard.
Pioneer Boulevard will be closed to all through traffic in both directions underneath I-5, nightly Monday, April 4 through Thursday, April 7, between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. These nightly closures are needed as crews work to construct the new Pioneer Boulevard bridge. Crews will be moving 12 new concrete girders into place; the girders will provide the structural foundation for the new bridge. The closure area is highlighted in red on the map below; motorists will be directed to follow the detour route highlighted in blue

ROSECRANS AVENUE & BLOOMFIELD AVENUE BRIDGE PROJECT

Earlier this month crews opened the new permanent pedestrian ramps for the Silverbow Avenue pedestrian overcrossing. There are no closures planned next week on this segment; all work will be conducted behind the k-rail. The second half of the Bloomfield Avenue bridge deck was poured this week.

CARMENITA ROAD INTERCHANGE PROJECT

There are no closures planned next week on this segment; all work will be conducted behind the k-rail. The temporary southbound I-5 on-ramp at Carmenita Road closed permanently last week and the new on-ramp is expected to open later this year. In the interim, motorists will be directed to continue on Firestone Boulevard, turn left on Alondra Boulevard, then turn right on Valley View Avenue to access the southbound I-5 on-ramp. For detailed closure information, including recommended detour routes, please visit the project Google map

The intersection of Excelsior Drive and Carmenita Road is closed temporarily, while the intersection is reconstructed to tie in with the new bridge. Also, the northbound I-5 Carmenita Road off-ramp has been temporarily reconfigured. Motorists that exit northbound I-5 at Carmenita Road will be directed to turn right on Excelsior Drive, left on Spring Avenue and left on Pumice Street to access Carmenita Road. Click the map below for more information regarding the new off-ramp configuration.

As a result of the traffic shift onto the new Carmenita Road bridge, the traffic pattern at the intersection of Firestone Boulevard and Carmenita Road has been temporarily detoured; motorists exiting southbound I-5 at Carmenita Road will only be permitted to continue straight on Firestone Boulevard.
