I-5 South Corridor Construction Activities

Santa Fe Springs and Norwalk  - The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) has implemented several construction activities on both directions of the Santa Ana Freeway (I-5) as part of the I-5 South Corridor Improvement Projects from the Orange County line to Interstate 605.  Some noticeable changes to the freeway system include new traffic patterns created by mainline traffic shifts and restriped lanes, roadway and ramp realignments, k-rail (concrete barriers) in place of shoulders, and large equipment and work crews near the roadway.   

Additionally, please be advised of these upcoming closures: 

TONIGHT 
LONG-TERM FULL CLOSURE  - NORTHBOUND I-5 CARMENITA ROAD ON-RAMP. 
Thursday, July 17 at 7 p.m.- Long-term full closure of the northbound I-5 on-ramp at Carmenita Rd.  This ramp will remain closed for approximately 18 months, until mid-2016, when the Carmenita Road Bridge is expected to complete. During this time, crews will complete the new 10-lane bridge, construct a new northbound on-ramp structure and a new center median, and realign the roadway.  

THIS WEEKEND
FULL CLOSURE THROUGHOUT THE WEEKEND -  NORTHBOUND I-5 ROSECRANS AVE OFF-RAMP.  Friday, July 18 at 10 a.m. to Monday, July 21 at 5 a.m.   

NORTHBOUND I-5 -  FULL DIRECTIONAL FREEWAY CLOSURE: 
Sunday, July 20, Overnight, 12:01 a.m. to 5 a.m. - northbound I-5 full freeway closure from Carmenita Rd to Rosecrans Ave.  
A paving and striping operation will prepare the lanes for the mainline traffic switch described below.

MAINLINE TRAFFIC SHIFTS: 
Monday, July 21 at 5 a.m. - a mainline traffic shift will be in place when all three northbound I-5 mainline lanes from Carmenita Rd to Rosecrans Ave. shift to the right.  

LONG-TERM FULL RAMP CLOSURE: 
Monday, July 28 at 5 a.m. - the southbound I-5 on-ramp at Rosecrans Ave. will close for approximately 6 to 9 months, through winter 2015. During the closure, crews will work to construct retaining walls and to reconstruct pavement for freeway widening.   
Please note that the southbound I-5 off-ramp at Rosecrans Ave. is scheduled for a long-term closures beginning on August 28, 2014.

Upcoming Construction Activities:  
The list below highlights other construction activities coming in late-summer/fall 2014   

Early September, 2014 - Alondra Blvd. Bridge Project.  Two newly constructed bridges,  the Alondra Blvd. Bridge and the Coyote Creek Overcrossing, will reopen to the public.  The intersection of Alondra Blvd. and Freeway Dr. will also open at this time. 

Late Summer 2014 -  I-5 Florence Avenue Interchange Project begins construction. This project extends from Orr and Day Road to just south of I-605.  It is the fifth project to begin construction in a series of six I-5 South Corridor Improvement Projects.  

Late Summer 2014 - Imperial Highway/Pioneer Blvd. Project.  The newly constructed, fly-over off-ramp at southbound I-5 at Imperial Highway will open.   

Early Fall 2014 - Alondra Blvd. Bridge Project.  
• Mainline Traffic Shift- Southbound I-5 lanes shift to the center of the roadway; the existing southbound lanes will become the new work zone.
• Permanent closure of the southbound I-5 on-ramp at Alondra Blvd.  

Fall/Winter 2014 - Florence Avenue Project.   Permanent ramp closure of the southbound I-5 on-ramp at Orr and Day Road in the city of Norwalk. 
Construction schedules are subject to change.  Some dates and times are still to be determined.  
The work is part of the I-5 South Corridor Improvement Project,  to widen the freeway and structures to add one HOV lane and one general purpose lane from the Los Angeles County/Orange County line to the San Gabriel River Freeway (I-605).
