Long-Term Closure for Alondra, Marquardt, and Firestone Boulevard Intersection

July 31, 2014

Santa  Ana  Freeway  (I-5)  South  Corridor  Improvement  Projects

Santa Fe Springs – Caltrans will fully close the intersection of Alondra Boulevard, Marquardt Avenue and South Firestone Boulevard beginning on Monday morning, August 4 at 6 a.m. The intersection will remain fully closed for approximately one month during a concentrated construction work schedule expected to complete in the first week of September, weather permitting.  Construction will take place during day and nighttime hours and on weekends.  A marked detour will direct motorists around the closure area using 166th Street, Carmenita Road, Alondra Blvd. and Firestone Blvd.

The long-term closure is necessary to complete final construction of the new Alondra Boulevard Bridge.  The work involves building-up the roadbed by nearly five feet to meet the bridge approach on the west end of the new bridge.

"Caltrans is committed to expediting the final work for the bridge so that we may safely return the roadway to the public as soon as possible," said John Yang, Caltrans I-5 Corridor construction manager overseeing the projects in Los Angeles County. "Caltrans thanks the motorists, residents, school districts, patrons and businesses for their patience during construction."

When the long-term closure is lifted, the new Alondra Blvd. Bridge will re-open to the public.  Additionally, motorists and pedestrians will regain access to the Freeway Drive/Alondra Blvd. intersection that has been closed since August 2013 for roadway improvements and realignment.

The Alondra Boulevard Bridge Project began construction in March 2012.  The 57-year old bridge was fully closed between Marquardt Ave. and Freeway Drive and demolished in June 2013. During the past year, the bridge has been reconstructed and widened from a four-lane to a six-lane bridge, with three lanes in each direction, and longer to accommodate a wider freeway. The new Alondra Blvd. Bridge in Santa Fe Springs is undergoing final work. Caltrans expects the bridge to open to the public in early September.

In addition to bridge reconstruction, the $110 million Alondra Boulevard Bridge Project is also adding one carpool and one general purpose lane in each direction, from North Fork Coyote Creek Bridge to Marquardt Avenue, reconstructing the North Fork Coyote Creek overcrossing, and realigning and upgrading adjacent frontage roads. The Alondra Project is scheduled to complete in mid-to-late 2015.  The contractor is C.C. Myers, Inc. of Anaheim, CA.

The construction is part of the $1.8 billion Santa Ana Freeway (I-5) South Corridor Improvement Projects to widen the freeway to add one carpool and one general purpose lane in each direction from the Los Angeles County/Orange County line to Interstate 605.
