Santa Ana Freeway (I-5) Construction Update - Monday, Sept. 15

Coming Soon!  Nightly Full Freeway Closures 
and an Extended 55-Hour Weekend Closure 

Norwalk and Santa Fe Springs - The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) will conduct overnight full freeway closures on the southbound Santa Ana Freeway (Interstate 5) next week, Mon, Tues, and Wed., September 22-24, from 1 a.m. to 4 a.m., from Carmenita Road to just before Valley View Avenue.   The work involves installing falsework, the temporary wood structure, for the new Carmenita Road Bridge. 

Travelling southbound on I-5, the detour will exit motorists at the Carmenita Road off-ramp.   To re-enter southbound I-5, turn right onto Carmenita Rd, then turn left on Alondra Blvd. 

Motorists are reminded that these southbound I-5 off-ramps are closed: 
• southbound I-5 Rosecrans Avenue off-ramp is closed through mid-2015. 
• southbound I-5 Imperial Highway off-ramp is closed; scheduled to reopen the week of 9/29.   

Other Construction Activities for the I-5 So.Corridor Improvement Projects

Extended Weekend Closure on September 26-29  
A 55-Hour Closure is scheduled on I-5 in both directions from Alondra Blvd. to Valley View Ave.  
• Two freeway connectors will be fully closed throughout the weekend: 
 southbound  I-605 to southbound I-5; and westbound SR-91 to northbound I-5.
• Overnight, (Fri. 9/26) Saturday morning, 1 a.m. to 7 a.m., expect a full freeway closure. 
• On Sat. & Sun., 9/27 & 9/28, from 7 a.m. to 1 a.m., two of 3 lanes closed in each direction.  
• Then, overnight,  from 1 a.m. to 7 a.m., more full freeway closures within these limits.
• Sunday night, 9/28, from 1 a.m. to 5 a.m., a final full freeway closure.   
• The Extended Weekend Closure ends Monday morning 9/29 at 5 a.m.   

Alternate Routes:  Motorists are advised to use alternate ways around the closure to avoid delays. Suggested detours are Routes SB-710, EB/WB-105, NB/SB-605, EB/WB-22 and NB-57.    

What to Expect:  The purpose of the weekend closure is to prepare the roadway for a traffic shift.  On Monday morning, 9/29, southbound I-5 mainline traffic will shift onto the center of the roadway and the existing southbound lanes will become the new work zone.  Also, the southbound I-5 Alondra Blvd. on-ramp will permanently close. 

CLOSED RAMPS   
• Northbound I-5 Carmenita on-ramp is closed until mid-2016. Use NB I-5 Rosecrans on-ramp.  
• Southbound I-5 Imperial Highway on-ramp is permanently closed. 
• Southbound I-5 Imperial Highway off-ramp is closed, but scheduled to reopen the week of 9/29. 
• Southbound I-5 Rosecrans Avenue on-/off-ramps are closed through mid-2015. 
• Southbound I-5 on-ramp at Alondra Blvd. will permanently close beginning 9/26.

SIDEWALK CLOSURE 
• Sidewalk on Imperial Highway - The sidewalk on the south side of Imperial Highway, between Kalnor Ave. and Pioneer Blvd. in Norwalk is closed through early 2015.  Pedestrians are detoured to the northern sidewalk on Imperial Highway.

October 2014 - Florence Avenue Interchange Project begins. This project extends on I-5 from Orr and Day Road to just south of I-605 in Downey and Santa Fe Springs.  It is the fifth project to begin construction in a series of six I-5 South Corridor Improvement Projects.
