IMPERIAL HIGHWAY & PIONEER BOULEVARD PROJECT
Crews have begun work to demolish old portions of I-5 that bridge across San Antonio Drive, Imperial Highway and Pioneer Boulevard. These bridge structures will be demolished one at a time, to make room for the new widened portions of the freeway. Bridge demolition activity will be conducted at night between 9 p.m. and 6 p.m.; the roadway underneath each respective I-5 freeway bridge will be closed to through traffic at night, while demolition is under way.

Nighttime demolition of the old San Antonio Drive bridge at I-5 is under way. San Antonio Drive / Norwalk Boulevard will be closed to all through traffic underneath I-5, from 9 p.m. Thursday, July 23 to 6 a.m. Friday, July 24. Closures for demolition activity will continue nightly between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m., Sunday, July 26 through Wednesday, July 29. During the daytime, partial lane closures in each direction will be in effect on San Antonio Drive / Norwalk Boulevard at I-5, between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.

The map below illustrates the recommended detour route that is in place during nighttime closures on San Antonio Drive / Norwalk Boulevard.

SAN ANTONIO DRIVE DETOUR MAP: The approximate closure area is highlighted in red; the recommended detour route is highlighted in blue.

Once demolition activity is completed at San Antonio Drive, crews will proceed to Imperial Highway and Pioneer Boulevard, however the dates / schedule for that work has not been finalized. Additional information will be provided as soon the schedule for the subsequent bridge demolition work is set.

Work is ongoing on Union Street, between San Antonio Drive and Paddison Avenue, to complete the planned roadway improvements. Union Street is being widened, sidewalks will be reconstructed and the street will become a cul-de-sac adjacent to San Antonio Drive. Access for local residents will be maintained at all times. Construction activity is also ongoing with several sound walls along the northbound and southbound I-5. In addition, work continues on the frontage roads along the northbound I-5 (Adoree Street) and southbound I-5 (Southbound Frontage Road). Adoree Street is temporarily closed between Norwalk Boulevard and Kalnor Avenue. Next Tuesday, July 28 crews will perform paving activity on Adoree Street; crews estimate Adoree Street between Kalnor Avenue and Norwalk Boulevard may be open to traffic as early as Wednesday, July 29.

ROSECRANS AVENUE & BLOOMFIELD AVENUE BRIDGE PROJECT
Rosecrans Avenue will be closed to through traffic in both directions under I-5 (between Bloomfield Avenue and Firestone Boulevard), from 9 p.m. Thursday, July 23 to 5 a.m. Friday, July 24 and nightly between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m., Monday night, July 27 through Friday night, July 31. Motorists will be detoured along the routes highlighted in green on the map below.

In addition to nightly closures on Rosecrans Avenue, during daytime work next week crews will mobilize a crusher in the center of the freeway, in order to process and recycle concrete and debris that was produced after the demolition of the Silverbow Avenue pedestrian bridge and the Rosecrans Avenue bridge.

CARMENITA ROAD INTERCHANGE PROJECT
Demolition activity and nighttime full freeway closures related to the old Carmenita Road bridge were completed Thursday night, July 23.

The intersection of Excelsior Drive and Carmenita Road is closed temporarily, while the intersection is reconstructed to tie in with the new bridge. Also, the northbound I-5 Carmenita Road off-ramp has been temporarily reconfigured. Motorists that exit northbound I-5 at Carmenita will be directed to turn right on Excelsior Drive, left on Spring Avenue and left on Pumice Street to access Carmenita Road. Click the map below for more information regarding the new off-ramp configuration.

As a result of the traffic shift onto the new Carmenita bridge, the traffic pattern at the intersection of Firestone Boulevard and Carmenita Road has been temporarily detoured; motorists exiting southbound I-5 at Carmenita will only be permitted to continue straight on Firestone.

In early-August crews will begin daytime pile driving activity to construct the new northbound I-5 Carmenita Road off-ramp. Additional information regarding this operation will be provided once the schedule for this work is finalized.

DISCLAIMER: Due to the dynamic nature of construction, please note that all dates and times are subject to change due to unforeseen operational factors or inclement weather.
