COMMERCE – The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) District 7 today announced that the southbound Santa Ana Freeway (Interstate 5) will be fully closed overnight between Slauson Avenue and Paramount Boulevard on Tuesday, September 29 and partially closed on Wednesday, September 30 in order to replace bearing pads and reset rocker bearings that were damaged in the fire under the bridge over the Rio Hondo River this past July. Northbound I-5 far left lanes will also be closed on Tuesday night. The Slauson Avenue on-ramp to southbound I-5 will also be closed both nights.

The closures are as follows:

Tuesday, September 29

·         Southbound I-5 full directional closure midnight to 5 a.m.

·         Northbound I-5 lanes 1 and 2 – 11 p.m. to 5 a.m.

·         Southbound I-5 Slauson Ave. on-ramp – 11 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Wednesday, September 30

·         Southbound I-5 up to three right lanes closed – 11 p.m. to 5 a.m.

·         Southbound I-5 Slauson Ave. on-ramp – 11 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Detours will be signed along adjacent roads.

Following the fire, the bridge was shored up with temporary supports in order to re-open the freeway to traffic on July 8 at 1:15 p.m. More permanent repairs were required. In mid-October, the first of two full freeway closures is planned to replace the damaged concrete. Dates and times will be announced next week.
