I-5 Corridor Improvements Between Orange County Line to the I-605

June 3, 2016

Week of June 5, 2016

FLORENCE AVENUE INTERCHANGE PROJECT

The week of June 5, crews will begin irrigation work on Longworth Ave. Crews will be installing pipe and some impacts to driveways may be required as part of this work. Residents in the vicinity of this operation will be notified with additional information.

The most recent pile driving activity adjacent to the Florence Avenue interchange along northbound I-5, just south of the Florence Avenue bridge, has been temporarily completed. Crews also completed the most recent operation driving test piles along the southbound I-5 Florence Avenue on-ramp.

Work is underway along Dollison Drive and Orr and Day Road in Downey and Santa Fe Springs, to construct cul-de-sacs and/or realigning streets adjacent to northbound and southbound I-5. To complete this work, construction fencing will be repositioned to allow adequate room for the work area.

Crews are working to form soundwalls along northbound and southbound I-5. Roadway excavation is underway behind k-rail and the construction fencing, along Mondon Avenue between Cecilia Street and Buell Street. Over the next few weeks crews will be pouring concrete for the new soundwall adjacent to southbound I-5. This work will be conducted weekdays (Monday through Friday) between 6:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. and will be ongoing for approximately the next two to three weeks.

Finally, work is ongoing on the Orr and Day railroad bridge, which runs perpendicular to I-5, underneath the freeway, south of Florence Avenue.

IMPERIAL HIGHWAY & PIONEER BOULEVARD PROJECT

Crews have begun work on the detention basin on Adoree Street / Zeus Street; this work will include grading, excavation and removal of the sidewalk on Zeus Street. This work will be conducted during the daytime, Monday through Fridays, and is expected to be ongoing for approximately one month.

Adoree Street and Frontage Road, have both been opened to through traffic between Imperial Highway and Norwalk Boulevard.

Crews have completed major construction of the retaining wall along Mondon Avenue, between Tina Street and Bayla Street. The contractor will return to the area at a later date to complete finishing work.

As crews work on Imperial Highway, Pioneer Boulevard and Norwalk Boulevard bridges at I-5, one lane in each direction will be closed on each street (at I-5) during the daytime.

Pioneer Boulevard will be subject to potential intermittent closures to through traffic underneath the I-5, on Monday, June 6 between 6:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. as crews perform work on the bridge deck. Delays are expected; it is recommended that motorists use alternate routes if possible. The closure area is shown on the map below in red, the detour route is highlighted in blue.

ROSECRANS AVENUE & BLOOMFIELD AVENUE BRIDGE PROJECT

Rosecrans Avenue underneath I-5 will be closed to all through traffic (motorists and pedestrians) in both directions, nightly between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m., Monday, June 6 through Friday, June 10. These closures are needed as crews remove falsework (bridge supports) from the new Rosecrans Avenue bridge. The closure area is shown on the map below in red; motorists will be directed to follow the detour routes highlighted in the map below in green

Crews may close outside lanes along northbound and southbound I-5 from Rosecrans Avenue to Alondra Boulevard, nightly between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m., Monday, June 6 through Friday, June 10. In addition, crews will close the southbound I-5 Carmenita Road off-ramp and the southbound I-5 Rosecrans Avenue on-ramp, nightly between 7 p.m. and 5 a.m., Monday, June 6 through Friday, June 10.

On Friday, June 24 crews plan to perform a traffic shift along northbound I-5, to realign northbound traffic from the outside lanes of the freeway, into the newly constructed center lanes. This traffic switch will allow crews to demolish the old Rosecrans Avenue bridge. As part of this traffic switch, the northbound I-5 on-ramp at Bloomfield Avenue will close permanently and the northbound I-5 off-ramp at Rosecrans Avenue will be closed for approximately the next four to six months. Additional information regarding this work will be provided once the schedule is finalized.

CARMENITA ROAD INTERCHANGE PROJECT

Crews may close outside lanes along northbound and southbound I-5 from Rosecrans Avenue to Alondra Boulevard, nightly between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m., Monday, June 6 through Friday, June 10. In addition, crews will close the southbound I-5 Carmenita Road off-ramp and the southbound I-5 Rosecrans Avenue on-ramp, nightly between 7 p.m. and 5 a.m., Monday, June 6 through Friday, June 10. Motorists will be directed to use the freeway ramps at Valley View Avenue while these ramps are closed. These ramp closures will allow crews to conduct paving operations. For detailed information regarding this closures including alternate routes, please visit the project Google map

On Friday, June 17, crews plan to open the full width of the Carmenita Road bridge to traffic. In addition, crews are working to open the northbound on- and off-ramps at Carmenita Road at the same time. Additional information will be provided as this date nears.

The intersection of Excelsior Drive and Carmenita Road has been closed temporarily for the last several months, while the intersection is reconstructed to tie in with the new bridge. Crews anticipate being able to reopen the intersection on Friday, June 17.

The northbound I-5 Carmenita Road off-ramp was temporarily reconfigured while crews are finishing construction of the new permanent off-ramp, which is expected to open by Friday, June 17. Until then, motorists that exit northbound I-5 at Carmenita Road will be directed to turn right on Excelsior Drive, left on Spring Avenue and left on Pumice Street to access Carmenita Road. Click the map below for more information regarding the new off-ramp configuration.

As a result of the traffic shift onto the new Carmenita Road bridge, the traffic pattern at the intersection of Firestone Boulevard and Carmenita Road has been temporarily detoured; motorists exiting southbound I-5 at Carmenita Road will only be permitted to continue straight on Firestone Boulevard.

The temporary southbound I-5 on-ramp at Carmenita Road has closed permanently and the new on-ramp is expected to open later this year. In the interim, motorists will be directed to continue on Firestone Boulevard, turn left on Alondra Boulevard, then turn right on Valley View Avenue to access the southbound I-5 on-ramp. For detailed closure information, including recommended detour routes, please visit the project Google map.
