I-5 Corridor Improvements Between Orange County Line to the I-605

February 19, 2017

Week of Feb. 19, 2017

FLORENCE AVENUE INTERCHANGE PROJECT

The drainage system construction along Longworth Avenue between Harvest Avenue and Orr and Day Road (adjacent to northbound I-5), has been completed for the time being.

On Monday, Feb. 20 crews will be drilling CIDH piles for the Orr and Day railroad bridge, within the freeway. This work will be ongoing for approximately three weeks and will be conducted during the daytime.

Crews will be performing signal work and retaining wall construction at Florence Avenue and Orr and Day Road and at Florence and Fairford Avenue intermittently, weekdays between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., for the next few weeks. This work will require lane reductions on Florence Avenue at Orr and Day Road and Fairford Avenue; please expect delays and use an alternate route if possible.

Beginning Monday, March 6, Florence Avenue will be reduced to one lane in each direction between Orr and Day Road and Fairford Avenue, for approximately two years. The Florence Avenue on-ramp to northbound I-5 will also be closed during that time. The Florence Avenue bridge is being reconstructed one half at a time, to accommodate the widening of I-5 below the bridge.

The diagram below outlines the first stage of bridge construction (which will take approximately nine to 12 months to complete), including the temporary lane configuration, related ramp closures, and pedestrian access. Heavy traffic and delays are expected in the area surrounding Florence Avenue at I-5 once this work begins; motorists are urged to use alternative routes whenever possible. To view all alternative route maps, visit the project website.

Additional information, including the date the contractor plans to start this work, will be widely publicized as soon as it becomes available

IMPERIAL HIGHWAY & PIONEER BOULEVARD PROJECT

At the beginning of March, crews plan to close the northbound I-5 on-ramp at Imperial Highway for 12 months. Once the date for this closure is set and the detour route is available, more information and a detailed detour map will be provided.

As crews work on Imperial Highway, Norwalk Boulevard and Pioneer Boulevard bridges at I-5, one lane in each direction will be closed on each street (at I-5) during the daytime, between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m.

ROSECRANS AVENUE & BLOOMFIELD AVENUE BRIDGE PROJECT

Rosecrans Avenue may be closed to all through traffic (motorists and pedestrians) in both directions underneath I-5, Monday through Fridays between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. Nighttime closures on Rosecrans Avenue will continue intermittently for the next six months. For detour information visit the project Google Map.

Pile driving activity adjacent to northbound I-5 near Rosecrans Avenue, is underway and will be ongoing for the next several weeks. This work will be conducted intermittently, Monday through Fridays between 7 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Please be advised that pile driving work may be loud and disruptive due to equipment noise, vibration and pounding related to this operation. When this work is underway, flaggers will be on site to direct traffic, while crews transfer piles from the contractor's yard onto the construction site.

On Wednesday, Feb. 22, N. Firestone Blvd. will be closed between Rosecrans Avenue and Markdale Avenue (access for local traffic only) from 12:01 to 6 a.m. as crews move a crane within the construction yard.

In two to four weeks, crews plan to close N. Firestone Blvd. from Rosecrans Avenue to Bloomfield / Markdale Avenue, for approximately six months. An exact start date for this closure has not been set, but will be widely publicized once the work is scheduled. The closure area is shown in red on the map below; additional information, including detailed detour routes will be provided once the work is scheduled.

CARMENITA ROAD INTERCHANGE PROJECT

Nightly lane reductions are planned on I-5 at Carmenita Road (one northbound lane and one southbound lane), Monday through Friday, between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. These lane closures are needed for electrical work and clean up.

Electrical work along the shoulders of the northbound and southbound I-5 freeway at Carmenita Road is ongoing. This work will take place Monday through Friday between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m.

In addition to this work, landscape and irrigation work is ongoing along Frontage Road, N. Firestone Boulevard and S. Firestone Boulevard. This work will take place Monday through Friday between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m.

VALLEY VIEW AVENUE INTERCHANGE PROJECT

In late-February or early-March, the temporary northbound I-5 on-ramp at Freeway Drive will close permanently.  Once the date for this closure is set and the detour route is available, more information and a detailed detour map will be provided.

Crews have completed demolition activity at the Valley View Avenue bridge.

Crews have closed the southbound Valley View Avenue off-ramp and reduced lanes (one lane in each direction) on the Valley View Avenue bridge over I-5. The duration of the ramp closure and lane reduction will be approximately two years. Heavy traffic and delays in the area are expected. If possible use alternate routes (shown on the map below). Portable changeable message signs have been placed in the vicinity to notify the motoring public.

The contractor will be clearing and grubbing vegetation along the northbound I-5 Valley View on-ramp, weekdays between the hours of 7 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.

Crews will be removing asphalt between Arbor Place and Park Place, weekdays between 7 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.

Multiple utility relocations are ongoing throughout the construction site. There will be intermittent lane reductions on both N. Firestone Boulevard and S. Firestone Boulevard. Work will be performed Monday through Friday.

A portion of S. Firestone Boulevard at Coyote Creek channel is now closed forutility relocation for a period of four to six months. Work will be conducted weekdays between 6 a.m. and 4 p.m. Businesses along Firestone Boulevard will remain open and detour signs will be posted. For detour information visit the project Google map.
