Construction Updates for the Week of July 19, 2015

FLORENCE AVENUE INTERCHANGE PROJECT
A community open house meeting will be held Thursday, July 30 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Florence Avenue Foursquare Church (11457 E. Florence Avenue, Santa Fe Springs). The public is invited to attend to learn more about the Florence Avenue Interchange Project and talk with members of the project team. For questions or more information regarding this meeting, contact Yessica Jovel, Caltrans Public Affairs, at [email protected] or (213) 897-3656.

Dollison Drive (between Quinn Street and southbound I-5 on-ramp) and the southbound I-5 freeway on-ramp on Dollison Drive have been permanently closed. As an alternate, motorists are encouraged to access the southbound I-5 freeway on-ramp on Studebaker Road. In addition, a long-term closure of the southbound I-5 on-ramp on Florence Avenue began in April and will be in place through January 2018.

IMPERIAL HIGHWAY & PIONEER BOULEVARD PROJECT
Before the end of July, crews may begin demolition activity of the old San Antonio Drive, Pioneer Boulevard and Imperial Highway bridges. Each bridge will take approximately three nights to demolish; crews will demolish each bridge one at a time. Demolition activity will require nighttime full street closures of the roadway at I-5, underneath each bridge. These nightly road closures will take place between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m., Monday through Friday. During the daytime, the contractor will be working to demolish the bridge abutments; daytime lane closures will take place between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. in each direction  on each respective street. The exact schedule for this work has not been finalized. Additional information, including related closures and detour information, will be provided as soon as it is available.

Work is under way on Union Street, between San Antonio Drive and Paddison Avenue, to complete the planned roadway improvements. Union Street is being widened, sidewalks will be reconstructed and the street will become a cul-de-sac adjacent to San Antonio Drive. Access for local residents will be maintained at all times. Construction activity is also ongoing with several sound walls along the northbound and southbound I-5. In addition, work continues on the frontage roads along the northbound I-5 (Adoree Street) and southbound I-5 (Southbound Frontage Road). Adoree Street is temporarily closed between Norwalk Boulevard and Kalnor Avenue; access will be maintained for local residents. Adoree Street will not be accessible from Norwalk Boulevard.

ROSECRANS AVENUE & BLOOMFIELD AVENUE BRIDGE PROJECT
The new southbound I-5 Rosecrans on and off-ramps opened to the traffic last week. Next week, work on the Rosecrans Avenue bridge will require partial lane closures on Rosecrans Avenue under I-5. While the street will remain open to through-traffic, crews will close one lane in each direction on Rosecrans Avenue (between Bloomfield Avenue and Firestone Boulevard), daily between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., Monday, July 20 through Friday, July 24.

On Thursday night, July 23, Rosecrans Avenue will be closed to traffic in both directions under I-5 (between Bloomfield Avenue and Firestone Boulevard), from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Friday, July 24. Motorists will be detoured along the routes highlighted in green on the map below.

Finally, a nighttime full closure of northbound I-5 at Rosecrans Avenue will be needed next week. The date and time for this closure has not been set, but more information will be provided as soon as the schedule for this work is finalized.

CARMENITA ROAD INTERCHANGE PROJECT
Demolition activity for the old Carmenita Road bridge is ongoing. *Please note, there are no nighttime full freeway closures scheduled Thursday, July 16; work will resume Friday night, July 17. Bridge demolition activity will require approximately one more week of nightly full freeway closures (Monday through Saturday nights) on northbound and southbound I-5, between Valley View Avenue and Rosecrans Avenue. Closures scheduled Monday through Thursday will take place between midnight and 5 a.m. and Friday and Saturday nights between midnight and 7 a.m.

In addition to the full freeway closures, the westbound SR-91 connector to northbound I-5 (during northbound I-5 full closure) and the southbound I-605 connector to southbound I-5 (during southbound I-5 full closure) will also be closed between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. (Monday through Thursday nights) and 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. (Friday and Saturday nights). Visit the project Google map for detailed detour information and a weekly schedule of closures related to bridge demolition activity.

The intersection of Excelsior Drive and Carmenita Road is closed temporarily, while the intersection is reconstructed to tie in with the new bridge. Also, the northbound I-5 Carmenita Road off-ramp has been temporarily reconfigured. Motorists that exit northbound I-5 at Carmenita will be directed to turn right on Excelsior Drive, left on Spring Avenue and left on Pumice Street to access Carmenita Road. Click the map below for more information regarding the new off-ramp configuration.

As a result of the traffic shift onto the new Carmenita bridge, the traffic pattern at the intersection of Firestone Boulevard and Carmenita Road has been temporarily detoured; motorists exiting southbound I-5 at Carmenita will only be permitted to continue straight on Firestone.

Finally, in early-August crews will begin pile driving activity to construct the new northbound I-5 Carmenita Road off-ramp. Additional information regarding this operation will be provided once the schedule for this work is finalized.

DISCLAIMER: Due to the dynamic nature of construction, please note that all dates and times are subject to change due to unforeseen operational factors or inclement weather.
